How to Take the Stress Out of Moving
›› Plan your move date well in advance.
Waiting until the last minute, especially during the busy summer season, limits your options. Try to stay away from moving at the end of the month when the demand is high.
›› Move only what you really need.
All too frequently people have difficulty parting with items. Before you even list your home for sale, clear out the clutter. Do not count on others to have the same sense of urgency to help with your unwanted items.
›› Start packing as soon as possible.
Movers offer packing labor and/or material and are able to estimate the cost associated with the service. If you decide to pack yourself, ask your mover for boxes and get started! Sturdy cartons, unprinted newspaper, tape, and markers are the tools of the trade. Set a schedule with attainable goals. Pack fragile items as if they are eggs: vertically. Items such as china and glassware travel best while standing on their ends. Check with your mover about items that must be boxed to assure safety during transit or storage.
›› Pace yourself.
The process of transitioning to a new location can be overwhelming. Plan in advance, work at a comfortable pace, and accept the assistance of others.
Moving day musts:
- Be on hand when the movers arrive.
- Fully discuss what is to be moved with your mover.
- Have beds stripped and appliances empty.
- Save your energy and let the moving crew disassemble your furniture.
- Read the contract before you sign it.
- Provide your mover with directions to reach your destination, considering that a large truck may need to take a different route than you.
- Be available at unloading to direct the crew with placement of your items.
